Latin
artists have achieved mainstream success, but Shakira has achieved
the most dramatic cross-over in music history, selling over 30 million
albums since the release of her debut album, Pies Descalzos, in
1996. Her first English-language album, Laundry Service, has sold
13 million copies since its release in 2001. Shakira's latest work
- the two-volume Fijacion Oral - has continued to break records
and cross language barriers. Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 sold over 157,000
copies in the first week of its U.S. release last June, topping
every Spanish-language album in history. The album debuted at number
one on Latin American and Spanish charts, and debuted at number
four in the U.S., earning her a Grammy award this year for best
Latin Rock/Alternative album. Shakira made history again when Fijacion
Oral Vol. 1 became the first Spanish-language album ever to rise
to number one in Germany. The single, "La Tortura," pulled in MTV
Music Video Award nominations - another first for Latin music -
and has received heavy rotation in mainstream radio play, on MTV
and VH1. Traditional Latin rhythms, rock, electronic dance music
and pop influences, combined with truly honest and intimate lyrics,
drive Shakira's newest and most ambitious offering. Don't miss your
chance to see the most successful Latin cross-over artist in history
perform live.
